The TMT Bar Manufacturing Process

1. Iron Making

The journey of producing TMT bars begins with sourcing premium raw materials, such as virgin iron ore and high-quality coal. These materials are transported to our integrated steel plant, where they undergo a solid-state reduction process in rotary kilns to produce Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) at a temperature of approximately 1150 ºC.


2. Steel Melt Shop

The DRI is then combined with pig iron and ferroalloys in induction furnaces. The entire mixture is melted at around 1650 ºC. After the removal of slag, the molten steel is transferred to a Ladle Refining Furnace (LRF) where it undergoes refining to eliminate unwanted sulfur and phosphorus. This step is crucial for enhancing the quality of the final product. The refined molten steel is directed to a Continuous Casting Machine (CCM) and solidified into high-quality billets.


3. Rolling Mill

Once the billets are formed, they proceed to the High UTS Quenching and Self Tempering (HUQST) Rolling Mill. In this phase, the billets are rolled into TMT bars at a high temperature of 1050 ºC, setting the stage for the unique properties of the final product.


4. Quenching

Post-rolling, the rebars undergo rapid cooling using reverse osmosis (RO) water sprayed onto them. This process hardens the outer layer of the bars, forming a Martensite rim while maintaining the core temperature.


5. Self-Tempering

As the hot core slowly transfers heat to the surface, the outer Martensite rim tempers into Tempered Martensite, creating an intermediate ring of Martensite and Bainite. This combination is what gives our TMT bars their exceptional strength characteristics.

6. Cooling

Finally, the bars are cooled gradually on an automatic cooling bed. This transformation solidifies the rebar's core into a ductile Ferrite-Pearlite structure, marrying a strong exterior with a ductile core—key attributes of Maithan 600 TMT bars.
